Mr. Tony Lamberton

MBChB, FRACS (Orth.), FNZOrthA

  • Hip & Knee Joint Replacement

Passionate about combining precision, innovation, and care to achieve the best outcomes for his patients.

About Tony

After completing his orthopaedic training in New Zealand, Tony was awarded the prestigious Ling Fellowship in Exeter, UK, where he trained under two of the world’s leading hip surgeons. He’s further broadened his skills through additional training in Canada, the USA and Europe.

With over 15 years of consultant experience and more than a decade using computer-guided knee replacement technology.

Tony has a special interest in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), working to create smoother, faster rehabilitation pathways for patients undergoing joint replacement. He also focuses on techniques to reduce surgical risks, such as computer navigation for knee replacements, strategies to minimise blood loss, and preventing blood clots (DVT and PE) after surgery.

In cases where joint replacements have failed or worn out, Tony is highly experienced in revision surgery, including the specialised procedure of impaction bone grafting for complex hip reconstructions.

He’s also actively involved in research and innovation. Since 2005, Tony has chaired the Tauranga Orthopaedic Research Society, which tracks surgical outcomes across the Bay of Plenty to ensure care meets or exceeds global benchmarks. He’s currently President of the New Zealand Hip Society and is part of the national Surgical Site Infection Improvement expert group.

Tony lives in Tauranga with his wife and three children. Outside of work, he enjoys the outdoors—skiing, paddleboarding or getting out on the water. A proud Tauranga Boys’ College Old Boy, he’s been involved with the Old Boys’ Association since 2007.
