About Simon

Originally from Christchurch, Simon moved to the UK with his family and completed his medical training in Manchester, and held junior doctor jobs in the northwest of England. Simon undertook orthopaedic specialist training in Birmingham, working at the prestigious Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He completed training in trauma surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital – the largest military hospital in the UK, where he was exposed to soldiers with battlefield injuries from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Simon went on to complete a 12-month Upper Limb Fellowship in Adelaide, gaining hands-on experience in complex trauma and elective upper limb procedures including arthroscopy, joint replacements, and soft tissue reconstruction. He followed this with a further year as a Clinical Fellow at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, where he further specialised in upper limb and microsurgery.

Simon has a keen interest in research and has published over 60 scientific papers and book chapters and completed his MD Thesis on Kienbock's disease of the wrist in 2023. He presents research nationally and internationally and is on the faculty of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association Hand and Upper Limb Section and is a founding member of the Global Elbow Network.

Simon is also passionate about teaching peers and medical students and supervises a number of undergraduate research projects.

Now based in the Bay of Plenty, Simon makes the most of the region’s lifestyle and is a keen runner and surfing. Although his golf career is temporarily on hold because of commitments to his young family.
